Gene Hackman was born on January 30, 1930, in San Bernardino, California, and is considered one of the outstanding character actors of American cinema. As an actor, he shaped Hollywood cinema for over five decades with an impressive range of roles - from hard-boiled policemen to shady lawyers.
Gene Hackman had his breakthrough in 1967 in "Bonnie and Clyde," where he portrayed the gangster Buck Barrow alongside Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. The role earned him his first Oscar nomination. The pinnacle of his career came in 1971 with "The French Connection," for which Gene Hackman won the Oscar for Best Actor. His portrayal of the uncompromising Detective Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle became a milestone of the police film genre and remains legendary to this day.
In the following decades, Gene Hackman demonstrated his extraordinary versatility in classics such as "The Conversation" by Francis Ford Coppola in 1974, "Superman" (1978) as the supervillain Lex Luthor, and "Unforgiven" (1992), for which he received his second Oscar as Best Supporting Actor. Gene Hackman had further defining performances in "Mississippi Burning" (1988), "Crimson Tide" (1995), and "The Royal Tenenbaums" (2001). He played his last role in 2004 before retiring from the film business.
