Gong Li

Gong Li, born on December 31, 1965, in Shenyang, is a Chinese actress and one of the most recognizable faces of Asian cinema worldwide.

Gong Li achieved her international breakthrough in the late 1980s and early 1990s through her intensive collaboration with director Zhang Yimou. In his visually stunning films "Raise the Red Lantern" (1991), "Red Sorghum" (1987), and "The Story of Qiu Ju" (1992), she portrayed strong, often oppressed female characters and established herself as an outstanding actress of Chinese cinema. For her performance in "The Story of Qiu Ju," Gong Li received the Best Actress Award in Cannes. Further significant collaborations with Zhang Yimou followed, including "To Live" (1994) and the wuxia epic "Curse of the Golden Flower" (2006).

Gong Li also gained international attention through roles in Hollywood productions. In "Memoirs of a Geisha" (2005), she played the rival geisha Hatsumomo, and in "Miami Vice" (2006), she appeared alongside Colin Farrell. She later excelled in Wong Kar-wai's "2046" (2004) and demonstrated her versatility in Disney's live-action adaptation "Mulan" (2020) as the powerful witch Xianniang.
