The Japanese term “kami” means spirits or gods, although an exact translation is difficult. Strong emotional reactions such as awe, fear or wonder are also described as “kami” in Japanese.
Sven Sauer selected images of five characters from protest movements of recent years in Hong Kong, Athens, Istanbul, Nantes and Cairo and stylised them for his installation. They are all people who were turned into icons of these protest movements by the media. The Dresden artist Bony Stoev created the sound design for the installation.
With their installation, Sven Sauer and Bony Stoev ask to what extent media images take on a life of their own and have a different meaning imposed on them. What is reality? What is the simplified interpretation meant to create a situation that's as easy to explain as possible? Why do we need icons singled out from the crowd to give an abstract whole a face in the first place?
From 26 to 28 January 2018, the two artists presented their installation on the Neumarkt in front of the Frauenkirche in Dresden. Together with voice artist Pascal Cürsgen, speaker-search produced an audio guide for it, which can be listened to on the project's website .
