The debate about equality is more topical than ever. Gender roles in film and television and sexism in advertising are hotly debated. But what about the choice of voices for audio productions?
Which stereotypes and role models are served and reinforced by choosing a voice by gender, and to what extent do these associations already influence voice casting? Is this ultimately just a self-perpetuating mechanism, or are these role models being played with deliberately?
The central question is: what effect does this have on the profession of voice artists? Are technical subjects, for example, predestined for male voices, and are beauty products easier to sell with young female voices? Is choosing a voice by gender the only way to meet the requirements of certain subjects? Or is it ultimately just a constantly repeated anchoring of prejudices that simply needs to be broken?
On Saturday, 10 November 2018, we will discuss these questions with experts, and you are cordially invited to join the discussion. In cooperation with the Association of German Voice Artists (vds), we are looking forward to a stimulating panel discussion followed by a lively exchange. The panellists will include Christina Puciata (chair of the Association of German Voice Artists, vds), Ania Mauruschat (graduate journalist, University of Basel), Notker Schweikhardt (member of the Berlin House of Representatives for Bündnis 90/Die Grünen and parliamentary group spokesperson for the creative industries) and Gerd Schulte Döinghaus (Executive Creative Director, Ogilvy & Mather Vienna). The panel will be moderated by Maxi Lengger (“Business Riot” and “Rrriot”).
