Ernest Borgnine

Ernest Borgnine, born on January 24, 1917 in Hamden, Connecticut, was an American actor who worked in film and television for over six decades. With his distinctive face and expressive presence, he became one of Hollywood's most versatile character actors.

Ernest Borgnine achieved his breakthrough in 1953 with the role of the brutal Sergeant "Fatso" Judson in "From Here to Eternity". Just two years later came his greatest triumph: for his sensitive portrayal of a lonely butcher in "Marty", he won the 1956 Oscar for Best Actor. The film made Borgnine internationally famous and established him as a serious artist.

In the following decades, Ernest Borgnine proved his versatility in numerous productions. He appeared in classics such as "The Wild Bunch" (1969), "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972), and "Escape from New York" (1981). He became known to a broad television audience through the series "McHale's Navy" (1962-1966), in which he played the title role. Borgnine was also active as a voice actor, notably as Mermaid Man in the animated series "SpongeBob SquarePants". Ernest Borgnine passed away on July 8, 2012 in Los Angeles.
