Ian Holm

Ian Holm Cuthbert was born on 12 September 1931 in Goodmayes, Essex, and was a British actor. He was considered one of the most versatile character actors of his generation and impressed audiences for decades both on the theatrical stage and in film and television.

His career began in the 1950s with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where Ian Holm quickly established himself as an exceptional theatre talent. His international breakthrough as a film actor came in 1981 with his celebrated portrayal of coach Sam Mussabini in "Chariots of Fire", for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Prior to that, Ian Holm had already caused a sensation in 1979 as the android Ash in Ridley Scott's science fiction classic "Alien".

In the following decades, Ian Holm embodied unforgettable roles in blockbusters and arthouse films alike. He became particularly well known as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001) and in the "Hobbit" films. Other significant appearances included "The Fifth Element" (1997) as Father Vito Cornelius and "Ratatouille" (2007) as the voice of food critic Skinner. Ian Holm passed away on 19 June 2020 in London.
