Jim Carter

Jim Carter was born on 19 August 1948 in Harrogate, Yorkshire, and is a British actor. He became internationally known primarily for his portrayal of butler Charles Carson in the acclaimed hit series "Downton Abbey" (2010-2015), for which he received multiple awards and worldwide recognition.

Jim Carter began his career in the 1970s in theatre before increasingly appearing in film and television productions. His early work includes appearances in "A Private Function" (1984) and "A Month in the Country" (1987). In the 1990s, Jim Carter appeared in productions such as "The Madness of King George" (1994) and "Brassed Off" (1996). He also took on memorable supporting roles in "Shakespeare in Love" (1998) and "Ella Enchanted" (2004).

Jim Carter achieved his international breakthrough with the role of the strict but warm-hearted butler Carson in "Downton Abbey", which he continued in the two feature films "Downton Abbey" (2019) and "Downton Abbey: A New Era" (2022). He has made further appearances in films such as "The Golden Compass" (2007) and "Transformers: The Last Knight" (2017). Jim Carter has been married to actress Imelda Staunton since 1983.
