We are delighted to be nominated for the German Audio Description Award for the second year in a row. With the audio-described version we produced of the film biography of the German artist Joseph Beuys, we convinced the jury in the preliminary round. The documentary by German director Andres Veiel premiered in competition at this year's Berlinale.
A total of 16 audio descriptions will compete for the title of "Best Audio-Described Film of the Year" next year. The award ceremony will once again take place at a gala at Kino International in Berlin on 20 March 2017.
The German Audio Description Award has been presented by the German Federation of the Blind and Partially Sighted (DBSV) since 2002. Thanks to the DBSV and the commitment of many prominent supporters, the significance and importance of accessible film have been brought into the public eye.
Audio-described films enable blind and visually impaired people to take part in cinematic works. In an additional soundtrack spoken by a voice artist, an audio description describes central elements of the plot as well as gestures, facial expressions and settings in a film. This creates an audio version that makes the film as a whole accessible to blind and visually impaired people.
