Denzel Washington

Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. was born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York (USA).

Since 1982, Denzel Washington became known to a wider audience through his role as Dr. Phillip Chandler in the television series 'St. Elsewhere'. In 1987, Denzel Washington played the role of Steve Biko in the apartheid drama 'Cry Freedom', directed by Richard Attenborough, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor.

Denzel Washington had his major breakthrough as an actor in 1989 with his role as Private Trip in the Civil War drama 'Glory', directed by Edward Zwick. In the following years, Denzel Washington celebrated further outstanding successes with films such as 'Malcolm X', 'The Pelican Brief' (alongside Julia Roberts), 'Philadelphia', 'Crimson Tide', and 'Training Day'.
