Gérard Depardieu achieved his breakthrough as an actor with his role in the French comedy film 'Les Valseuses' (1974) directed by Bertrand Blier. During the 1980s, Gérard Depardieu became a star of French cinema. From the 1990s onwards, he also became an international star. Alongside Jean Reno, he is one of the few French actors who have successfully made a name for themselves internationally.
For his role in the French historical film 'Cyrano de Bergerac' (1990), Gérard Depardieu received his only Oscar nomination to date. Gérard Depardieu is also well known for portraying the menhir producer Obelix in a total of four Asterix film adaptations.
