William Hurt

William Hurt was born on March 20, 1950, in Washington, D.C., and was an American actor. He was considered one of the outstanding character actors of his generation and shaped American cinema of the 1980s and 1990s through his intense, often intellectual roles.

William Hurt achieved his breakthrough in 1980 with the science fiction thriller "Altered States," in which he portrayed a scientist searching for altered states of consciousness. This was followed by an impressive series of defining roles: In "Body Heat" (1981) he played a lawyer in an erotic thriller, in "The Big Chill" (1983) a television star in an ensemble cast. For his portrayal of a gay prisoner in "Kiss of the Spider Woman" (1985), William Hurt received the Oscar for Best Actor. In the following years, he was nominated again for the Oscar for "Children of a Lesser God" (1986) and "Broadcast News" (1987).

In later years, William Hurt frequently took on supporting roles in major productions, including "A History of Violence" (2005) and "Into the Wild" (2007). From 2008 onwards, he appeared as Thaddeus Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including in "The Incredible Hulk," "Captain America: Civil War" (2016), and "Black Widow" (2021). William Hurt passed away on March 13, 2022.
